Artist's Statement

Lady Liberty, 16” x 20”, is a collage, not oil, my usual and comfortable medium.  Though my son admired it, it was only after mys oldest granddaughter told me what she saw that I began to appreciate and see it differently.  Her sight and my sight are as follows:

This modern-day Lady Liberty represents, I hope, all Americans.  The image is what I subconsciously felt following 2016: the Yin, the Yang and all-the-in-between of our country.  Yin is represented by the spikes, the grit, the determination of Lady Liberty; while the face is Yang.  Her complexion reflects our community of colors, of features. The lettering/words indicate our nation’s historical commitment to education for all.  The flower pays tribute to our love of nature, to Mother Nature, to our beloved Earth.  And the musical notations show our country’s appreciation for the arts.

To me, the greater lesson is that we learn from the experiences of others, in this case my granddaughter.  These are my lessons from this experience:

  • A one-sided view is incomplete
  • We need each other to reflect our own values
  • We need each other to reflect our deficiencies
  • Strength comes in many forms
  • Differing strengths and talents makes us all stronger.
